Berlin Comedians Stand Up for Afghan Women 21.02.ESG Berlin

Dear friends, dear supporters,
We warmly invite you to a special event:
a socio-cultural comedy show that draws attention to the precarious and life-threatening situation of LGBTQ+ people in Afghanistan.
In Afghanistan, gay and queer people are subjected to severe persecution, violence, discrimination, and even the threat of death. Many of them are forced to live in hiding, in constant fear, or on the run. We believe that art and comedy can create a sensitive, respectful, and at the same time effective space to foster awareness, dialogue, and compassion.
With this event, we would like to:
• raise awareness of the situation of LGBTQ+ people in Afghanistan
• give a voice to people who would otherwise not be heard
• enable solidarity, support, and concrete help
You can find all further information in the attached flyer.
We would be very happy if you would:
• attend the event
• share this invitation within your network
• or support us with public outreach and assistance
Of course, there will also be delicious Afghan food and a sweet dessert!
🌈 Thank you very much for your solidarity and commitment 🌈

Meeting with members of parliament
On December 3, 2025, a meeting took place with members of the Berlin Parliament, specifically aimed at women. In a safe and confidential setting, the participants had the opportunity to ask questions, share political concerns, and engage directly with representatives of the Parliament.

On December 3rd, we, along with young people from the Youth Migration Service in Moabit @jmd_berlin_mitte_cjd, met with Member of Parliament Hanna Steinmüller @hanna.steinmüller at the Paul-Löbe-Haus. Time was short – so many important questions and topics were raised: the tight housing market, the halted Afghanistan resettlement programs, excessive bureaucracy, experiences of discrimination, too few language courses, and significant barriers to accessing the job market, as well as the crucial question: why isn’t the government doing anything for women in Afghanistan? Despite the difficult topics, it was an incredibly engaging and enriching evening. Thank you for the open discussion – we look forward to a follow-up!

“We are part of Berlin” with Afghanischer Frauenverein MAH
On November 14, 2025, a meeting organized by the non-profit association Interkulturanstalten Westend e.V. took place at Ulme35, where Mahdiah Hashemi, founder of the Afghan women’s association Afghanischer Frauenverein MAH, also spoke. Here are some impressions of the event.
Topic of the event:
Political and social participation of migrant communities in Berlin – exchange of experiences between Ukraine, Syria, Poland and Afghanistan.
Goals:
• Raising awareness of migrants’ political participation
• Exchange of experiences
• Identifying challenges and solutions
• Strengthening advocacy
• Building and strengthening networks
• Exploring the concept of “safe space” and ethical collaboration between communities
Key needs of the Afghan community in Berlin:
• Psychosocial support for women affected by war, migration, and discrimination
• Genuine access to language courses and the job market
• Lack of safe spaces for women – free from patriarchal pressure and without fear
• Reliable information about rights, the system in Germany, and integration
• Recognition as active members of society – not just as “refugees”
• Stable financial support for projects by and for women
Migrant women, especially Afghan women, are frequently confronted with trauma, violence, discrimination, and enforced silence.
Creating a safe space means:
• free from patriarchy
• free from familial or societal pressure
• free from political manipulation
Postcolonial structures continue to be evident in media, culture, and German funding structures:
• Voices of migrant communities are heard less
• Decisions about us are made without us
• Migrant-oriented projects receive little and short-term funding
What needs to change:
• Real participation of migrant women in decision-making processes • Sustainable funding for safe spaces for women • Recognition of the experiential knowledge of migrant women – not just academic knowledge
To strengthen the political participation of migrants, the next step is very clear to me:
We must bring the voices of migrant women to the center of political decisions – not on the sidelines, not as listeners, but as true partners.
And tomorrow we can start with something very simple:
building practical networks between migrant organizations – especially between women’s organizations. Networks that share information, connect affected women with the right support services, and form a unified voice in dealings with policymakers.
A migrant community becomes strong when it tells its own story. I am convinced that women – especially women with experiences of war and displacement – not only need support, but are also the future leaders of our community.
Our next step:
Building a real alliance of migrant women – for language, for justice, for security, and for political presence.
This is not just a wish; it is a necessity.
